JURIEN BAY, WA
Campfires, Sand-Boarding and 4WD Beach Access. WA dishes it up again at Sandy Cape Recreational Park.
Western Australia offers some pretty epic campsites along its stunning coastline. One standout campsite we came across was Sandy Cape Recreational Park. Located 2.5 hours north from Perth, it’s a great location for locals and tourists alike. There are 78 campsites available on a first in first serve basis. It’s one of those staggering places where you end up staying longer than you planned, just like we did. We ended up having an amazing week stay at this beach camp fronting onto the pristine white sandy beach and the turquoise blue waters.
Dune Surfing
Part of the beach is accessible to four-wheel drive vehicles to access the sand dunes and also to launch boats or jet skis off the beach. During peak seasons a sand board hire van is also situated here, and boy did we get a thrill out of it! It had boards on hire for all ages and skill levels at a reasonable price. Everyone had so much fun scaling the steep sand dunes and we spent an entire afternoon running up the dunes, board under arm just to get a few seconds of pure adrenaline rush.
A Floating Boardwalk
Walking further down the beach is a rocky ledge where the track continues to take you to a spectacular lookout. On a floating boardwalk with three separate vantage points, this ookout gives the best views of the ocean, especially at sunset. Once the sun goes down, this spot is great to look at the starry skies. Fishing off the beach was popular, however the fish weren’t on the bite during our stay. Instead we cooled off in the crystal clear waters and beach combed along the beach collecting a diverse range of seaweeds.
It’s Dog Friendly!
Sandy Cape Recreational Park cost us $20 per night for 2 adults and 2 children to camp. Payment is taken via honesty box or in person if a caretaker is onsite at the time. Sites are two wheel drive accessible and can fill up quickly during public holidays. The campsite amenities include toilets, showers, a dump point, rubbish bins and non potable water. It is dog friendly, and has phone reception as well as a seasonal cafe selling coffee, snacks and ice creams, which was a big hit with the kids. Firewood can also be purchased here as open fires were permitted during our time of stay.
Near the Pinnacles
Using this campsite as a base, we were able to visit the incredible rock formations of the Pinnacles and also explore the Stockyard Gully Caves. Both of these attractions were just under an hour of travel and are highly recommended to visit when in the area. So when next in WA, be sure to come check out Sandy Cape Recreation Park.
