A good light bar offers exceptional performance and goes the distance. Does the 40in single roaw LED bar from Lightforce stack up to the challenge?

There is always an inherent risk involved with driving outback country roads at night. Decreased visibility and increased amounts of roaming wildlife make for a nasty combination, which is why having adequate lighting is just so darn important. Yep, you could say I take my lighting seriously! So, when I was given the opportunity to test out an LED light bar from arguably one of the most renowned names in the industry, Lightforce, I was more than happy to oblige.

Lightforce has a solid reputation for producing quality lighting solutions, and when you take a closer look at the 40in single row LED bar that’s now firmly mounted to my trusty Landcruiser, it’s easy to see why. It just looks and feels like a quality, well made unit.  Extruded from 6063 aluminium and finished in a UV-resistant anodised coating, it has been purposely designed to face the world’s harshest conditions.

Let’s face it, you can have the brightest light in the world, but it means jack-squat if it doesn’t last the test of time on your 4WD. As mentioned above, the 40inch single row LED bar utilizes 6063 aluminium for the main body. It also incorporates a hard-coated scratch resistant polycarbonate lens, so its strength is categorically assured. Throw in a genuine Gore® waterproof membrane with mechanical seal, quality military spec wiring harness with waterproof Deutsch connectors, and durable stainless steel mounting hardware, and you’ve got yourself a product that has a waterproof rating to IP69K and is ready for years of performance.

Adding to this product’s long-term reliability is a whole bunch of electrical safeguards. This include the likes of over, under and reverse voltage protection, and pulse width modulation thermal management circuitry.

It’s also protected against electromagnetic and radio frequency interference (RFI).

The LED Bar utilises high output European LEDs, which are tuned within the reflectors to produce unparalleled performance in their class.

Ok, so there’s no denying this product looks great on paper, but the big question is how does it perform in the real world? Well, after being bolted to the roof of my LandCruiser for just over 20,000km to date and having successfully completed a tough touring lap of New South Wales, I’m quite impressed.

It seems to illuminate not just in front of you, but it seems to shed plenty of light onto the side of the road as well, which is vital for spotting wildlife well before they become a problem.

The colour temperature and light quality is pleasant to the eye, which aids in the prevention of driver fatigue, which is a massive positive for 4WD touring in general!
